Is It Really Coming This Time? The Half-Life 3 Legend!
There have been many rumors and discussions about Half-Life 3. However, recently, new claims and leaks about Half-Life 3 have emerged that are more true than false.
Half-Life 3 has already earned its place among the games that were never made, but have never been forgotten. A leak that Valve was officially developing the project has revived one of the internet’s longest-running memes.
Since the release of Half-Life 2: Episode 2, there have been constant rumors about the return of Gordon Freeman and his famous crowbar. While there is still no official confirmation, the latest leak brings us as close as we’ve gotten to an official update in a few years.
According to a post shared on Reddit, voice actress Natasha Chandel has announced on her website that she is involved in a project being developed by Valve, codenamed Project White Sands . Unfortunately, Chandel's website was down at the time of writing, further adding to the mystery.
Valve is currently known to be working on a hero shooter called “Deadlock,” leading to speculation that Chandel was referring to another project. However, Half-Life 3 is also rumored to be in development under the name White Sands, a reference to a military testing ground in New Mexico that is both a national park and the main base of operations for Black Mesa.
Half-Life 3 has long been considered impossible, but it’s important to note that Valve is actively trying to get back into game development. After several major leaks, as well as one of the studio’s worst-kept secrets, Deadlock, Valve recently released Counter-Strike 2, a remake of its hit competitive shooter. While not a major departure from Counter-Strike, the changes made were significant enough to justify a separate release for the game.
That said, it's also entirely possible that Project White Sands is a game closer to Half-Life: Alyx. The VR-exclusive game is widely considered one of the best experiences of its kind. However, it doesn't serve as the third main game in the series, nor does it offer any answers to Half-Life 2: Episode 2's cliffhanger ending.
Whether Project White Sands will actually be Half-Life 3 remains to be seen. But it’s hard to imagine whether the third installment will be worth the nearly two-decade wait. Valve has repeatedly stated that it doesn’t make Half-Life games just for commercial success, and that it needs a good reason to return to the series. Perhaps the success of Alyx and Counter-Strike is the signal Valve is looking for.
